Active Learning and Engagement in College Classrooms

The Active Learning and Engagement in College Classroom microcredential is designed for individuals who are interested in successfully reaching college learners with contemporary strategies and actions that motivate engagement in learning. Participants can be current faculty in a variety of educational settings or those transitioning from the private sector to adjunct positions in higher education. This experience will allow learners to engage in innovative strategies, using technology and interactive learning methods with college learners. This microcredential will expose participants to strategies for engaging learners to fully participate in the learning process and facilitating the use of metacognitive skills. By completing this microcredential, participants will gain an understanding of the complexity of college student populations, the climate of the college classroom, and the application of current advances in promoting active learning in the college classroom.

Earning Criteria

- Participate in a discussion post by responding to contemporary learning strategies and how they promote instructor, social, and cognitive presence.
- Provide a peer critique of at least one colleague’s discussion post, offering feedback on active learning strategies and suggestions for adaptation across modalities.
- Earn at least 85% on an Engagement Strategy Plan that includes:
-- A proposed active learning activity and the instructional technology that supports it.
-- A written reflection on how the plan fosters student engagement and community building in diverse learning environments.

- Identify available instructional technologies to support student engagement
- Describe active learning strategies for online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes
- Identify available instructional technologies to support active learning
- Review strategies to support active learning in large courses and smaller groups

Time to Complete

The Active Learning and Engagement in College Classrooms will take approximately 10 hours to complete over a two-week period.
