Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center is dedicated to helping students reach their potential with a UMBC degree. We provide centralized support services to all undergraduate students at UMBC. Through a coordinated approach and an unwavering commitment to student success, the Academic Success Center fosters a welcoming environment that provides a one-stop opportunity through Academic Policy, Academic Learning Resources, and Academic Advocacy for students to achieve their academic goals and claim their future with a UMBC degree.

Career Center
The UMBC Career Center, within the Division of Student Affairs, aims to empower all students and graduates to create their own success stories. We work with students at every academic level, from first-year freshmen to graduate students. Our services include career advising and counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting, on-campus interviews, career and professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities (internships, co-ops, and research).
College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences
Mission – exploring, supporting, and coordinating research and education in the natural and mathematical sciences through innovative thinking, and responsibility to our students, staff, faculty, and society. Vision – to be recognized and respected as a premier research college with a diverse and dynamic network of faculty and staff who work to collaboratively extend the boundaries of science and pursue excellence in the delivery and innovation of teaching and learning in STEM.
Community Leadership Graduate Programs
The Community Leadership programs at UMBC prepare aspiring and practicing leaders with the skills and experience needed to generate transformative social change. We help students develop greater self-understanding, engage with the assets and challenges of urban communities, hone practical leadership skills, and build personal and professional relationships that will support their growth as leaders.
Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication
In an increasingly interdependent world, the study of languages and cultures, including the heritage languages and cultures of immigrants to the United States, is a fundamental part of every student’s education. Knowledge of at least one foreign language and familiarity with different societies equip university graduates for more intelligent choices as citizens of today’s world, and enhance their effectiveness in a range of career fields, including law, journalism, business, education, health care, banking, social work, management, international administration and many others in the public and private sectors. The study of linguistics and human communication provides perspectives and tools of analysis useful in every human endeavor.
Division of Information Technology
The Division of Information Technology has approximately 83 full-time staff members and 80 undergraduate or graduate students that work each day to support the mission of UMBC through the delivery of IT services to the campus.

FinancialSmarts @ UMBC provides you with the tools necessary to make informed and effective decisions about your finances. Managing money is an important part of your daily life and we encourage you to be well versed in this important life skill that many find challenging.
Global Studies
The Global Studies Program combines interdisciplinary coursework, foreign languages, and study abroad to facilitate broad inquiry into the ecological, economic, cultural, ideological, and political issues of our day. Our undergraduate majors travel the world to study languages and cultures; on campus they study the global-local nexus and work on many projects including the cultivation of urban green spaces and the resettlement of refugee families in Baltimore.
Greater Washington Partnership
The Greater Washington Partnership is a civic alliance of the region’s leading employers who are committed to fostering unity and making the Capital Region—from Baltimore to Richmond—the most inclusive economy in the nation. The goal of GWP is to Advance Inclusive Growth Across the Capital Region, from Baltimore to Richmond. In 2018 the Partnership launched the Collaborative of Leaders in Academia and Business—Capital CoLAB (CoLAB)–to drive solutions that prepared more learners for in-demand, digital tech roles in the region. CoLAB’s vision is to make the Capital Region the most diverse digital tech workforce in the country, which is done by partnering with employers and educators to build digital tech pathways that prioritize equitable access to industry-aligned skills. As a Capital CoLab university partner, UMBC is able to issue digital micro-credentials to students who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with those technical skills in demand across our region.
i3b – Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging
UMBC is one of the most diverse campuses in the nation, and we value the richness that such diversity brings to campus life. The Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging create opportunities for students to build their awareness and knowledge of diverse people, cultures, and belief systems. Through facilitated discussions, informal gatherings, educational engagements, presentations, and campus-wide events, individual students, student organizations, and classes learn the skills to create inclusive, just and mutually respectful communities at UMBC and beyond.
Institute of Extended Learning
UMBC’s Institute of Extended Learning (IXL) provides non-credit education to connect the UMBC campus to the broader community. IXL is dedicated to providing our communities with access and pathways to innovative academic experiences through exploration and rigorous programing. IXL extends UMBC’s reach and expertise to learners of all ages and backgrounds promoting accessible community programing to attract new and returning students to attend UMBC through our Summer Enrichment Academy, Test Prep Academy, year-round youth and certificate programs. IXL’s vision is to build connections through explorations, discovery and smart fun.
Instructional Technology & New Media
Instructional Technology & New Media helps faculty solve pedagogical problems or create new learning opportunities through efficient, effective use and support of technology. Our Technology Support Center (TSC) provides first-level basic IT support and curates the campus’ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Our Instructional Technology team provides workshops and consulting. Finally, our New Media Studio provides multi-media production services including Digital Storytelling.

Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising
The mission of the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising (OAPA) is to empower all undergraduate students at UMBC to make informed decisions about their academic pathways, to support exploratory, pre-allied health, and incoming students specifically, and to lead the campus coordination of academic advising efforts through training, assessment, and support.
Office of Academic Opportunity Programs
The mission of the Office of Academic Opportunity is to provide resources and support to students who are traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary education, including low-income, first-generation, and minority students, in order to facilitate academic success. The unit coordinates with departments on campus, as well as, agencies off campus to develop programming specifically designed to improve student outcomes. Our activities are directed toward pre-college students who seek enrollment in post-secondary institutions, UMBC students who strive for academic success, and students interested in enrolling in graduate study.

STEM Ready
STEM Ready diversifies our region’s future workforce by empowering students who are traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) fields to succeed in college and career. The program is a partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Montgomery College (MC), the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), along with local and regional industry representatives. Starting with an application in sophomore year of high school, this pathway supports students in Montgomery County to pursue STEM careers and be part of the regional STEM workforce.
Student Conduct and Community Standards
Student Conduct and Community Standards supports the University’s dedication to student success and its educational purposes and goals by publishing, enforcing, drafting and interpreting standards of student behavior and related policies and procedures; facilitates student and community development and ethical growth opportunities promoting personal integrity, civility, self-responsibility, citizenship and appreciation for diversity; works to maintain a safe and productive environment supporting the University’s educational purpose and the students’ educational goals; and promotes the privileges and responsibilities associated with a student’s affiliation with the University.
Summer Enrichment Academy
The Summer Enrichment Academy at UMBC offers unique, fun, challenging and mind-expanding academic summer workshops and camp programs for middle school and high school students that can’t be found anywhere else. SEA brings our students exposure to the college experiences with opportunities in science, engineering, technology, the arts and humanities, all led by UMBC faculty, industry professionals and graduate students. Rigorous, engaging, 1-week summer workshops and camp programs are designed to spark our students deepest passions and interests. Change the expectation of a boring summer: Give your child the opportunity to tap into their creative talents, expand technical knowledge and hone academic skills while their friends are at home watching TV or playing video games.

The Maryland Early Childhood Leadership Program
An initiative of the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities, MECLP is at the forefront of early childhood leadership, workforce development and advocacy in Maryland. The Sherman Center is extremely lucky to have Louise Corwin, co-founder of MECLP, former Visiting Executive in Residence, and current Co-Chair of MECLP’s Advisory Committee; Liran Laor, MECLP’s Program Director, and Graduate Assistant Michele Berry spearheading MECLP’s exciting and critically important work. In partnership with the Institute for Early Education Leadership and Innovation at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, MECLP offers a graduate course – Leading for Change in Early Childhood – and through its Community of Practice and other activities provides early childhood professionals throughout Maryland with the knowledge and tools needed to ensure Maryland remains a leader and innovator in early childhood leadership.
The Shriver Center
The Shriver Center addresses critical social challenges by bridging campus and community through engaged scholarship and applied learning. Through the work of The Shriver Center, UMBC has become a national leader in applied learning, community engagement, and community-based service delivery.
UMBC Police Department
The mission of the UMBC Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment that enhances the quality of life for the university community. We are committed to the prevention of crime; protection of life and property; preservation of peace, order, and safety; enforcement of laws and university policies and the safeguarding of individual rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. With community service as our foundation, we investigate crimes as well as incidents that may impact campus safety to seek solutions to foster a sense of security. We accomplish this by working in collaboration with the community, treating all individuals within our jurisdiction with respect, fairness, and compassion, and earning public trust and confidence by holding ourselves to the highest standards of performance and ethics.
