Explorations in Extraordinary Geometry

The Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) at UMBC offers middle and high school students a unique, engaging, and intellectually stimulating experience. With a diverse range of one-week workshops and courses, SEA immerses students in the world of science, engineering, technology, the arts, and humanities—all led by UMBC faculty, industry professionals, and graduate students.

SEA's college-style experiences are designed to inspire students to think critically, work collaboratively, and challenge themselves in ways they won’t find anywhere else.

The most interesting geometric objects are often the most difficult to visualize, but they don't have to live only in the pages of textbooks. Throughout the week, we will explore topics ranging from topology to solid and differential geometry through a variety of hands-on projects. Using materials such as paper, fabric, and yarn you will bring to life spiky "stellated" polyhedra, surfaces from the 4th dimension, the opposite of a sphere, and much more! Along the way we will also discuss the mathematics behind these objects so you may gain an even deeper understanding than can come from holding them in your hands.

Earning Criteria

- Complete Explorations in Extraordinary Geometry activities.
- Attend at least 3 workshops.
