Graduate School Academic and Community Preparedness

The Graduate School Academic and Community Preparedness badge recognizes students who have completed the OPP program preparation and orientation course. By completing this course, earners gain strategies, tips, knowledge and resources in navigating UMBC and the surrounding community, guidance on graduate-level writing expectations, ensuring that they are aware of university policies and procedures related to academic integrity and plagiarism, and working knowledge of soft skills that are vital to their success in a graduate-level program (i.e. time management and overcoming writers’ block). Most importantly, learners will establish a stronger understanding of academic and social integration at UMBC, and how that has a direct impact on their student experience and preparation for their professional careers.

This non-credit course is designed to prepare students for the academic, professional, and
personal challenges of graduate school. Participants will develop essential skills for success,
including time management, research strategies, academic writing, and communication. By the
end of the course, students will be equipped with tools to navigate graduate-level expectations and excel in their programs.
