This microcredential recognizes UMBC student leaders who excel in their role as Orientation Peer Ambassadors (OPAs). Through a comprehensive program, OPAs gain valuable skills in leadership, communication, inclusivity, and problem-solving. They effectively deliver information about UMBC resources, lead engaging orientation programs, and create a welcoming environment for new students. By completing required training, participating in orientation events, demonstrating effective communication and leadership skills, and reflecting on their experiences, OPAs earn this microcredential, showcasing their commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive campus community.

Earning Criteria

- Attend seven days of orientation training
- Complete a minimum of 20 Orientation programs
- Demonstrate effective communication, customer service, and leadership skills, as evidenced by coordinating and completing supervisor evaluations and feedback sessions.
- Complete a reflection on experiences handling difficult situations or unique challenges in the role.

Learning Outcomes

- Deliver information about UMBC resources and support services to new students, their families, and campus partners, adapting communication styles to meet the needs of different audiences.
- Apply critical thinking and decision-making skills to analyze and address complex situations that arise during Orientation and identify potential solutions independently or within a team.
- Model inclusive behavior and create an engaging, welcoming environment that reflects UMBC's values of diversity and community, while fostering positive interactions with new students and staff.
- Examine one's personal growth and challenges encountered in the Orientation Peer Ambassador role through written reflection, identifying skills developed and areas for future improvement.

Time to Complete

Approximately 12-16 weeks, often earned throughout Summer Session I & Summer Session II.
