Responsible Conduct of Research: Ethical Data Handling and Use

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training is fundamental to producing quality, ethical research. RCR is required for all doctoral students, master’s thesis students, and postdoctoral scholars on campus, but benefits all engaged with the research process. While online self-paced CITI training may be used to complete RCR, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) mandates that all personnel funded on their grants complete in-person, discussion-based RCR training across many topics. This microcredential serves as documentation of that in-person, discussion-based training for one required topic. Graduate students and postdocs who are not NIH funded may use online CITI training or this set of microcredentials to satisfy their UMBC RCR requirement.

This particular training covers the topic of data acquisition and laboratory tools, as well as the management, sharing, and ownership of data. It ensures that researchers understand proper methods for collecting and handling data, maintaining data integrity, and complying with data sharing and ownership policies. The training also addresses best practices for documenting and storing research data securely.
