Responsible Conduct of Research: Socially Responsible Science
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training is fundamental to the production of quality, ethical research. RCR is required for all doctoral students, masterâs thesis students, and postdoctoral scholars on campus, but benefits all who are engaged with the research process. While online self-paced CITI training many be used to complete RCR, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) mandates that all personnel funded on their grants complete in-person, discussion-based RCR training across many topics. This microcredential serves as documentation of that in-person, discussion-based training for one required topic. Graduate students and postdocs who are not NIH funded may use online CITI training or this set of microcredentials to satisfy their UMBC RCR requirement.
This particular training covers the topic of the scientist as a responsible member of society, contemporary ethical issues in biomedical research, and the environmental and societal impacts of scientific research. It ensures that researchers understand their broader responsibilities, including ethical considerations and the potential implications of their work on society and the environment.
