The Microbial Frontier: Exploring Tiny Life with Big Impacts
The Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) at UMBC offers middle and high school students a unique, engaging, and intellectually stimulating experience. With a diverse range of one-week workshops and courses, SEA immerses students in the world of science, engineering, technology, the arts, and humanitiesâall led by UMBC faculty, industry professionals, and graduate students.
SEA's college-style experiences are designed to inspire students to think critically, work collaboratively, and challenge themselves in ways they wonât find anywhere else.
Students will spend the week engaging in hands-on activities, addressing some of the misconceptions surrounding the field of microbiology, and gaining a holistic understanding of microorganismal importance. Students will learn to view and stain samples under the microscope, culture (grow) different types of microorganisms in the laboratory, test water supplies for harmful bacteria and protists, and analyze microbial growth. These concepts and procedures are practical for high school-level and higher biology courses.
