UMBC VITA - Level 2

This micro-credential program equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to prepare basic federal income tax returns as IRS-certified VITA volunteers. Through a comprehensive blend of online training and hands-on volunteer experience, participants gain a deep understanding of tax laws and regulations, apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios, and develop strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Earners of this micro-credential will gain expertise in tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements and apply their knowledge to real-world tax scenarios, using tax preparation software effectively. This micro-credential also recognizes one's contribution to the community by providing free tax preparation services.

This micro-credential is awarded to individuals who have completed two years of service as IRS-certified volunteer income tax preparers. The earner is dedicated to providing a much-needed service to individuals who may not be able to afford it and is equipped to provide tax assistance.

Earning Criteria

- Earn the UMBC VITA Microcredential and/or one prior year of equivalent volunteer service.
- Pass the IRS Advanced level certification exam with an 80% or higher score.
- Complete 15 hours of related training.
- Complete at least 25 hours of tax preparation services during a single tax season.

Time to Complete

About 40 hours total; ~5-7 hours of training, ~3 hours to complete the test; a minimum of 25 volunteer hours
